Once upon a time, in a cozy little city zoo, lived two best giraffe friends named Jojo and Pip.
Jojo was tall with bright, golden-yellow spots, while Pip was a little shorter with dark, chocolate-brown patches. As popular zoo animals, they did absolutely everything together. Every morning, they stretched their long necks to eat the sweetest leaves from the very top of the acacia trees. They played silly games like "Hide and Seek," which is always a funny game in a children's story about friendship when the characters are the tallest animals around!
Life was perfect, until one sunny afternoon when things at the zoo began to change.
A Sad Goodbye at the Zoo
The zoo had suffered a very heavy financial loss. Not enough visitors were coming to see the zoo animals, and the zoo director didn't have enough money to buy food for everyone.
The zoo committee held a big meeting and made a difficult choice.
"We cannot afford to feed both giraffes," the director sighed. "We must send Jojo back to the wild, where food is free and plentiful."
The very next day, a big truck came and gently took Jojo away to the wild. Pip was left all alone in the zoo enclosure. For days, Pip didn’t want to play. Even the freshest, crunchiest leaves tasted like cardboard without a best friend to share them with.
The Daring Zoo Escape
Pip realized something very important: A giraffe's heart is just as big as its neck, and Pip's heart missed Jojo too much.
Pip decided it was time to leave and start a true jungle adventure. Late at night, when the moon was high and the zoo guard was fast asleep and snoring (Honk-shooo, honk-shooo), Pip made a move. Using those incredibly long, wobbly legs, Pip gently stepped right over the zoo fence!
Tip-tap, tip-tap. Pip’s hooves clicked quietly on the city streets. Pip walked out of the town, across the grassy plains, and followed the smell of fresh rain and wild trees all the way to the edge of the great green jungle.
A Happy Jungle Adventure
The wild was huge! There were thick vines, massive trees, and strange new sounds. Pip peeked through the green leaves, looking left and right. If you are reading this as a short bedtime story, you might be wondering if Pip was scared. But Pip was too excited to be afraid!
Suddenly, Pip heard a very familiar sound. Crunch, munch, crunch.
Pip looked up. There, reaching for the highest branch of a giant baobab tree, were bright, golden-yellow spots.
"Jojo!" Pip called out.
Jojo spun around, dropping a mouthful of leaves. The two giraffe friends ran toward each other and did a wonderful, twisting "giraffe hug," wrapping their long necks together in pure joy.
From that day on, Jojo and Pip lived happily ever after. They never had to worry about running out of food again, and every day was a brand new kids story about giraffes waiting to happen!
