Ten-year-old Captain Leo adjusted his star-goggles as his spaceship, the Stargazer, hummed with energy. Beside him floated his glowing, round robot companion, Nova.
"Coordinates set, Captain," Nova beeped. "Today, we are visiting the Great Solar Family! Eight unique children, all spinning around their very wise Grandfather."
Leo pressed the hyper-drive button. "Let’s go meet them!"
Grandfather Sun: The Heart of the Family
The Stargazer zipped out of hyper-sleep, and suddenly, the cockpit was filled with blinding, golden light.
"Whoa!" Leo shielded his eyes.
"That is Grandfather Sun," Nova explained. "He isn't a planet; he is a massive star. He is a glowing ball of super-hot hydrogen and helium gas. His golden-white light means he is incredibly hot, and he is so gigantic that over one million Earths could fit inside him! His gravity is the invisible hug that keeps all his eight planet children safely circling around him."
1. Mercury: The Speedy Little Brother
First in line was a small, dark rock zooming around Grandfather Sun at lightning speed.
Color Meaning: It is a dusty grey, which means it has no atmosphere (air) and is covered in rocky craters, much like a moon.
Size & Specialty: It is the smallest of the eight planets. Mercury's specialty is speed! Because it is so close to Grandfather Sun, it races around him faster than any other planet.
2. Venus: The Bright and Boiling Sister
Next, they approached a planet glowing like a pearl in the dark space.
Color Meaning: Venus looks yellowish-white because she is completely wrapped in thick, toxic clouds of acid.
Size & Specialty: She is almost the exact same size as Earth. Her specialty is heat! Those thick clouds act like a heavy winter blanket, trapping Grandfather Sun's heat and making Venus the hottest planet in the family. She also spins backward compared to most other planets!
3. Earth: The Lifegiver (and Her Son)
The Stargazer slowed down as a beautiful, sparkling marble came into view.
Color Meaning: Earth is a swirl of sapphire blue, emerald green, and cloudy white. The blue means oceans of liquid water, the green means living plants, and the white means a breathable atmosphere.
Size & Specialty: Earth is the largest of the four rocky inner planets. Her specialty? She is the only planet we know of that has life!
"Look!" Leo pointed. "Earth isn't alone."
"That’s right," Nova beeped happily. "Earth has one son, the Moon. He follows his mother everywhere, protecting her from space rocks and using his gravity to gently pull her ocean tides back and forth."
4. Mars: The Rusty Warrior
Moving further out, they spotted a small, brightly colored planet.
Color Meaning: Mars is a striking reddish-orange. This color means the planet's soil is full of iron—the exact same stuff that makes old bicycles rust on Earth!
Size & Specialty: Mars is about half the size of Earth. Its specialty is extreme geography. It is home to Olympus Mons, a giant volcano that is three times taller than Mount Everest!
5. Jupiter: The Giant Big Brother
Suddenly, the spaceship felt tiny. Looming ahead was a planet so massive it dwarfed all the others they had seen.
Color Meaning: Jupiter is painted with swirling stripes of orange, brown, red, and white. These colors mean he is a "Gas Giant," made entirely of swirling, stormy gases with no solid ground to land on.
Size & Specialty: He is the undisputed king of the planets—the biggest of them all. His specialty is the Great Red Spot, a massive, swirling hurricane that has been blowing for hundreds of years and is large enough to swallow Earth whole!
6. Saturn: The Lord of the Rings
As they flew past Jupiter, a gasp escaped Leo’s mouth. Floating in the blackness was a pale sphere surrounded by a majestic, glowing halo.
Color Meaning: Saturn is a pale gold and yellow, another massive Gas Giant made mostly of hydrogen.
Size & Specialty: Saturn is the second-largest planet. Its specialty is its breathtaking rings. "Those rings aren't solid," Nova taught Leo. "They are made of billions of pieces of sparkling ice and rock, dancing together in perfect circles."
7. Uranus: The Tilted Ice Giant
The Stargazer was getting very far from Grandfather Sun now. The next planet was quiet and freezing.
Color Meaning: Uranus is a bright, icy light blue. This color comes from a special gas called methane in its atmosphere.
Size & Specialty: It is the third-largest planet. Its specialty is very silly: it rolls on its side! A long time ago, something huge crashed into Uranus, knocking it completely over. Now, it orbits Grandfather Sun like a giant, rolling blue barrel.
8. Neptune: The Windy Edge of the Family
Finally, at the very edge of the Solar Family, they found the last brother.
Color Meaning: Neptune is a deep, dark ocean blue, also caused by freezing methane gas, but much darker and stormier than Uranus.
Size & Specialty: It is slightly smaller than Uranus but much heavier. Neptune's specialty is wind! It is the wildest, windiest planet in the family, with freezing gales that blow faster than a fighter jet.
Leo looked out the rear window of the Stargazer. Far in the distance, Grandfather Sun looked like just a bright, twinkling star.
"Eight children," Leo whispered. "Some made of rusty rock, some made of freezing gas, and one beautiful blue home with a Moon for a son."
"Knowledge complete," Nova chirped. "Setting course for home!"
