Jesus Calms the Storm: A Bedtime Bible Story for Kids
If you are looking for comforting bedtime Bible stories for kids, the story of Jesus calming the storm is a beautiful reminder of God's peace. Tonight, snuggle in tight as we travel back in time to a boat on the Sea of Galilee.
Setting Sail on the Sea of Galilee
Once upon a time, at the very end of a busy day, Jesus and his disciples were standing by a beautiful, sparkling lake called the Sea of Galilee.
The sun was starting to set, painting the sky in sleepy shades of purple and orange. Jesus had spent the whole day teaching and helping people. Now, he was very tired and ready to rest.
"Let's go across the lake to the other side," Jesus told his friends.
They all climbed into a sturdy wooden boat. As the boat gently rocked back and forth on the water, Jesus found a soft cushion at the back. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and fell fast asleep.
A Great Storm Arrives
For a little while, everything was perfectly quiet. The boat glided over the smooth water under the twinkling stars.
But suddenly, the weather changed. The wind began to blow. Whoosh! Swish!
The wind blew harder and harder. The little waves turned into big waves. Soon, giant, splashy waves were crashing against the boat! The little ship tossed up and down, and water began to spill over the sides.
Jesus's friends were fishermen who knew all about the water, but this storm was so big that even they were scared. They held on tight, looking around in the dark.
Where was Jesus?
Jesus Calms the Wind and Waves
They looked to the back of the boat, and there he was—still completely, peacefully asleep. He wasn't worried at all.
His friends ran to him and woke him up. "Jesus! Wake up!" they cried. "Don't you care that we are in a terrible storm?"
Jesus opened his eyes. He didn't look scared or worried. He stood up in the rocking boat, looked out at the angry wind and the giant waves, and he raised his hands.
With a strong, calm voice, Jesus spoke to the storm:
"Peace, be still."
Instantly, the wind stopped blowing. Instantly, the giant waves flattened out. The lake became as smooth and quiet as a piece of glass. The loud, scary storm was completely gone, replaced by a deep, gentle silence.
A Goodnight Lesson for Kids
Jesus turned to his friends with a warm smile. "Why were you so afraid?" he asked gently. "Did you forget that I am right here with you?"
His friends were amazed. They whispered to each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves listen to him!"
They realized that because Jesus was in their boat, they were perfectly safe. They didn't need to be afraid of the dark, or the wind, or the waves.
A Goodnight Prayer
Just like the wind and the waves listened to Jesus, he watches over you, too. This is one of the most comforting Christian bedtime stories because it reminds us that Jesus is always in our boat.
Whenever you feel a little bit scared of the dark, or if you have a worry in your heart, you can remember the words Jesus said to the storm: "Peace, be still."
Jesus is always with you, keeping you safe and sound. Now it is time to close your eyes, take a deep breath, and rest perfectly in his peace. Goodnight, sleep tight, and sweet dreams.
